The invasion is driven by Karma, a seal allowing Ōtsutsuki members to resurrect via their hosts. Momoshiki places this mark on Boruto after being defeated alongside Kinshiki during their attempt to drain Kurama. Later, Kara's leader Jigen is exposed as a vessel for Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, who survived Kaguya's betrayal thousands of years ago. Amado reveals that all Karma users, including Boruto and Jigen, will eventually be consumed by the clan. When Isshiki attempts to take Kawaki, Naruto confronts him directly. Kurama sacrifices himself to limit Isshiki's lifespan, causing the ancient enemy to die shortly after. Before his death, Momoshiki seizes control of Boruto's body to kill others, but Sasuke and Kawaki intervene until Boruto regains control.

In Their Own Story

Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki and Kinshiki abduct Naruto Uzumaki to revitalize their dying Divine Tree using the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra. Boruto, Sasuke Uchiha, and the four Kage save Naruto and defeat the invaders, but Momoshiki places a 'Karma' mark on Boruto before dying. Later, Kara's leader Jigen is revealed as Isshiki Ōtsutsuki's vessel, who seeks Kawaki for resurrection. During the conflict, Kurama sacrifices himself to limit Isshiki's lifespan, causing his death. Momoshiki then possesses Boruto to kill everyone, but Sasuke and Kawaki fight him off until Boruto regains control. Isshiki orders Code, guardian of the Ten-Tails, to continue the clan's will. Code releases Eida and Daemon, cyborgs created by Amado. Eida offers to help Code kill Naruto if he spares Kawaki, as her seduction powers prevent normal love except with Ōtsutsuki. Code finds Kawaki, and Boruto fights him using Karma until Momoshiki takes control of Boruto's body, forcing Kawaki to kill him. Momoshiki revives Boruto, turning him into a full Ōtsutsuki.
