Originally introduced by Masashi Kishimoto's superiors to boost popularity during the Chunin Exams arc, Orochimaru was intended to be a 'flamboyant' villain with a powerful aura. His design emphasizes a 'pasty and sickly' face to enhance his scary looks, drawing inspiration from the Japanese folktale Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari where he opposes Jiraiya. Orochimaru later escaped when Sasuke was weakened during a fight with Itachi, only to be sealed away again by Itachi's Susanoo. Following Kabuto's defeat, Sasuke used a Cursed Seal on Anko Mitarashi to release Orochimaru, granting him a new body made from Jugo and absorbed Kabuto flesh. He subsequently joined Sasuke's quest for answers, helping revive the first four Hokages before aiding the Allied Shinobi Forces against the Shinju.

Orochimaru's journey began in Konoha as a student of Hiruzen Sarutobi, but he eventually fled after abducting villagers like Yamato for experiments. He founded Otogakure to serve his goals, infiltrating the Chunin Exams by killing Shiore and assuming her identity before branding Sasuke with a Curse Mark. During the invasion, he disguised himself as the Fourth Kazekage but was forced to retreat when Hiruzen sacrificed himself using the Reaper Death Seal. Two and a half years later, he confronted Naruto's group while seeking Sasuke, dissuading him from killing Naruto by noting his utility against Akatsuki. After Sasuke voided Orochimaru's technique and trapped his soul, Orochimaru briefly escaped during the fight with Itachi but was sealed again. In the war arc, he used a White Zetsu clone to transfer his being, undid the Reaper Death Seal to regain ninjutsu, and assisted in subduing the Shinju. Post-war, he resumed experiments in a more humane manner with Taka as lab assistants, though Konoha maintained tight surveillance on him.
