Lore & Background

This arc reveals that the Ōtsutsuki clan views humans merely as resources for their survival. The abductors, Momoshiki and Kinshiki, are successors of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki who arrive to claim Kurama. Their plan involves using the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra to grow a Divine Tree in their dying dimension. The conflict establishes the concept of 'Karma,' a mark that acts as a resurrection mechanism allowing an Ōtsutsuki to overwrite and possess a host's body. Before his death, Momoshiki places this mark on Boruto, setting the stage for future possession. This storyline also introduces Kara, a group searching for individuals with Karma marks, and sets up the mutiny within their ranks involving Koji Kashin and Amado.

In Their Own Story

Momoshiki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki abduct Naruto Uzumaki to use Kurama to revitalize the dying Divine Tree. Boruto, Sasuke Uchiha, and the four Kages manage to save Naruto and defeat the invaders together. However, before dying, Momoshiki places a mark called 'Karma' on Boruto. Later, Amado reveals that Karma allows the Ōtsutsuki clan to resurrect via the host's body. Isshiki Ōtsutsuki eventually possesses Jigen and attempts to find Kawaki, another Karma user. When Naruto confronts Isshiki directly, the enemy dies due to his limited lifespan. Momoshiki then uses this opportunity to possess Boruto and attempt to kill others, but Sasuke and Kawaki fight him until Boruto regains control of his body.

Reader's Guide

The arc begins with the abduction of Naruto by Momoshiki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki, who seek Kurama to save their dimension. The rescue effort involves Boruto, Sasuke, and the four Kages fighting alongside each other. After defeating the initial invaders, the group learns about Karma from Amado, who explains that it allows for resurrection through possession. This knowledge becomes crucial when Isshiki Ōtsutsuki takes over Jigen's body. The conflict escalates as Isshiki targets Kawaki, leading to a confrontation where Naruto sacrifices himself by being sent to another dimension with Hinata by Kawaki. This sequence concludes with Momoshiki fully possessing Boruto, forcing Kawaki to seemingly kill him before Momoshiki revives Boruto as a full Ōtsutsuki.
